Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) in Katunayake is Sri Lanka's main gateway, about 35 km north of Colombo. Here's what you need for a smooth departure.
Getting there and check-in times
- From Colombo: roughly 45–60 minutes by car via the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03). Allow extra time in peak hours.
- Check-in: arrive 3 hours before international departures. Check-in usually closes 60 minutes before the flight.
Transport to and from the airport
- Airport taxi / private transfer — the most convenient, with fixed fares to Colombo and the suburbs.
- Airport Express bus to Colombo Fort — the cheapest option.
- Ride-hailing apps operate from the designated pickup area.
At the airport
- Duty-free — Sri Lanka is known for arrivals duty-free (electronics and appliances) as well as the usual departures shopping.
- Lounges — pay-per-use and airline lounges are available airside.
- SIM cards and currency — available in the arrivals hall.
